Answers:

  1. Do I have to pay to use Sale Site?

No, you can browse the site without paying or becoming a member.  You can browse the Sheep Listings page to see information about sheep that the Sale Site members are listing for sale.  You can look at the Farm Listings page to see the list of members/breeders with links to their Farm Information pages.  You can also browse the Fiber Listings page.  However, if you want to become a member and add your own listings to the site, you will need to pay a fee as described on our Membership Information page.

  2. What's the difference between a "Guest" and a "Member"?

A guest can be anyone who visits the site without logging in to the Members Area.  A member has joined the Sale Site and has their own personal login ID and password enabling them to access the Members Area.  In the Members Area, a member can view, modify, and/or add Listings to the site.

  3. What benefits do I get if I become a Member?

The basic membership benefit is that your Farm Listing is added to the Sale Site database and made visible to anyone browsing the site.  Here are some additional membership benefits:

    1. You can add "sale" listings (see the question below for more on "Listings")
    2. You can update your listing information online anytime.  For example, you can change the descriptive text on your Farm Information page and/or upload new photos to keep your page "fresh".
    3. You can add Sheep Listings and/or Fiber Listings (for no additional fees) up to the limit allowed by your membership type. For more on membership types, see our Membership Information. For your Sheep Listings, each sheep listed will have a link to an automated Pedigree page.  This Pedigree is generated from information from the NASSA online database.  The pedigrees are shown 4 generations deep on a page, but each sheep in the pedigree has a link that can be clicked to bring up a new pedigree page for that sheep.  This enables "browsing" the pedigree as far back as the records go.  Backtracking can be done using your browser's "Back" button.  This feature can be very helpful to potential buyers of your sheep, enabling fast, easy research on the hereditary information (e.g., colors, markings, bloodlines.)
    4. Listing management is fully automated, so you will do your own creation and maintenance of these using online forms in the Members Area.  Site guests will be able to browse all of the listings, sorting and searching for what they are interested in using characteristics such as fiber type (raw fleece, roving, yarn -- for fiber listings), color, and price.

  4. Can I become a Member and get a Farm Listing without listing any sheep for sale?

Yes,  you will get a Farm Listing even if you don't list any sheep for sale.  As long as your membership remains current, you can add sheep or fiber listings anytime.  Note, however, that if you allow your membership to expire, all of your listings will be disabled (but could be re-enabled again if you renewed your membership within 30 days of expiration.)  Also, even with no active "sale" listings, your farm listing will still be available for guests to view from the "Farm Listings" page.

  5. What are "Listings"?

There are several types of listings on the Sale Site.  Each category of listings can be browsed by site guests using the sorting and searching features to help them narrow in on what they are interested in.  For example, they might want to look at the Sheep Listings and search for only the "grey" sheep.  Or they might want to just look at the sheep for sale in the state of Washington.  Each individual item listed includes a link to the listing member's Farm Listing, where contact information is shown.  Here are the categories of listings currently supported:

    1. Farm Listing:  The "Farm Listings" page shows a complete list of all Sale Site members.  Each list item contains basic information about the member's farm (Farm Name, Owner's Name, Location) that can be used as search or sort criteria for the list.  The Farm Name in the list is a link to the individual member's Farm Information page.  This page shows detailed contact information (including email and web site links) as well as some descriptive text and a few pictures.  The left section of the Farm Listing (with the contact information and one or two small pictures) is also shown in the detailed listings (Sheep, Fiber)
    2. Sheep Listing:  The "Sheep Listings" page shows a complete list of the sheep listed for sale by all members.  The list is similar to the "Farm Listings" list in that the information in the columns can be used as criteria for sorting and searching.  Each list item contains the members's Farm Name (that is a link to their Farm Info page), and then some detailed information about the specific sheep for sale (sheep's name, registration number, color, sex, small picture, and selling price.  The sheep's registration number is a link to its pedigree page while the small picture is a link to a larger picture.  The sheep's name is a link to a Sheep Information page specific to that particular sheep that looks similar to the Farm Information page:  the same left side panel of contact information but the main section of the page will show a larger picture of the sheep, expanded notes, and additional information and pictures that are not in the one-line listing.
    3. Fiber Listing:  This is like the Sheep Listings, but has categories like fiber type (raw fleece, roving, yarn, etc.), color, and price per ounce.

  6. How is the Sale Site related to the Search Site?

Both the Sale Site and Search Site use the NASSA online database. The Search Site is a free benefit to NASSA members (as long as their membership is current) to provide visibility into the registry database. The Sale Site is a service to NASSA members, but an annual fee is charged for Sale Site membership. This fee helps to pay for the cost of hosting and maintaining the site. Any current NASSA member can obtain an account (login/password) for the Members Area of the Search Site. A Search Site account is required in order to get a Sale Site membership. Both use the same login and password, and while you are logged in to one, you can move back and forth between the members areas of the two sites.
